1.19.9 "Semilla"

"Semilla"

Genesis 39:1-41:16
Matthew 12:46-13:23
Psalm 17:1-15
Proverbs 3:33-35

As part of my responsibilities at the church, I teach membership classes. We also offer membership classes for those who have Spanish as their primary language. Having never had a spanish class, it would be a disaster if I was to teach in spanish, but I do sit in on the classes and help out with my "spanglish". Having done this for a couple years, I'm getting much better at following the lesson & conversation. Usually the way I learn is there is a word that will appear, and i'll look it up in my translator on my phone. It becomes my "word for the day".

Yesterday in class we were talking about the importance of God's word, and my "word for the day" was "Semilla" (suh MEE ya) Some of you may know what that is, but for the rest of us, it means "Seed".

Today's reading in Matthew 13 Jesus speaks of "semillas" as well. He's telling the parable of the farmer sowing seeds and then explains it to his disciples. He speaks of 4 circumstances of where the seed falls. Let's apply this to our lives as we look at this.

1. "As he scattered them across his field, some seeds fell on a footpath, and the birds came and ate them." (v. 4) this "represents those who hear the message about the Kingdom and don't understand it. Then the evil one comes and snatches away the seed that was planted in their hearts." (v.19)

2. "Other seeds fell on shallow soil with underlying rock. The seeds sprouted quickly because the soil was shallow. but the plants soon wilted under the hot sun, and since they didn't have deep roots, they died." (v.5-6) This "represents those who hear the message and immediately receive it with joy. But since they don't have deep roots, they don't last long. they fall away as soon as they have problems or are persecuted for believing God's word." (v.20-21)

3. "Other seeds fell among thorns that grew up and choked out the tender plants." (v.7) This "represents those who hear God's word, but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the worries of this life and the lure of wealth, so no fruit is produced." (v. 22)

4. "Still other seeds fell on fertile soil, and they produced a crop that was thirty, sixty, and even a hundred times as much as has been planted!" (v.8) this "represents those who truly hear and understand God's word and produce a harvest..." (v.23)

As you look at these four scenarios, where do you align? How do you respond to the word of God?

A couple of key points to pull from this:
1. Make sure you're connected to the body of Christ! Notice what happens if you don't have deep roots.
2. Don't get caught up in the cares of life. It will chock off the harvest that God has for your life.

Notice that seed that is doing what it is supposed to do is PRODUCING HARVEST! Is your life bearing fruit? If not, make sure to till the soil of your soul. Get into God's word. Develop understanding. Connect with the Body of Christ.

God's Word is a "semilla" and will bear fruit in good soil!
