"Focus on the Mission"
Genesis 26:17-27:46
Matthew 9:1-17
Psalm 10:16-18
Proverbs 3:9-10
How are your "resolutions" going? We're 12 days into the new year. Have you become the "new person" you hoped to be? It's not quite that easy is it? I think there's something in all of us that wants to experience "change", but it's tough to accomplish when we continue to live the same way.... same habits, same schedules... etc.. If we don't clearly define the direction and goals that God puts before us, it's way too easy to get distracted, get off course, and settle for the mediocrity of the past.
Jesus is an incredible example of focus. "As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at his tax collector's booth. 'Follow me and be my disciple,' Jesus said to him. So Matthew got up and followed him. Later, Matthew invited jesus and his disciples to his home as dinner guests, along with many tax collectors and other disreputable sinners. But when the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, 'Why does your teacher eat with scum?' When Jesus heard this, he said, 'Healthy people don't need a doctor - sick people do.' Then he added, 'Now go and learn the meaning of this Scripture: "I want you to show mercy not offer sacrifices." For I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.'" (Matt. 9:9-13)
Jesus was focused on his mission. He came to seek and save the lost. That meant risking his reputation. That meant dealing with disreputable people. He was able to filter what was "on task", and what was a distraction.
How can we apply this to our lives? I think one of the most important things is to determine to hear the voice of God. When he directs us to do something, be it great or small, we must make sure that the steps we take are leading in that direction. It is so easy to get off task and off course.
We also must keep distractions far from us. It can be as practical as this: if God is leading you to lose weight, keep away from the sweets. Far too often dreams fail in small moments of weakness. Dreams die only for lack of focus.
What has God led you to do? Focus on the mission.
Through the Power of the Spirit,
Live the DREAM!
