Happy New Year!
We're standing on the edge of the pool of 2009 and ready to jump in! Who knows what the Lord has in store for us this year!
Today's reading in Proverbs (1:1-6) opens this new year: "These are the proverbs of Solomon, David's son, king of Israel. Their purpose is to teach people wisdom and discipline, to help them understand the insights of the wise. Their purpose is to teach people wisdom and discipline, to help them understand the insights of the wise. Their purpose is to teach people to live disciplined and successful lives, to help them do what is right, just, and fair. These proverbs will give insight to the simple, knowledge and discernment to the young. Let the wise listen to these proverbs and become even wiser. Let those with understanding receive guidance by exploring the meaning in these proverbs and parables, the words of the wise and their riddles."
Reading this introduction to the book of Proverbs really compels us to understand the need we have to prioritize scripture in this new year. If we want to grow in Christian maturity, and weather any storm, we must be in the word daily.
For the past 5 months of 2008 my mother in law has come to live with us. She's aging, and not too mobile, and she has some memory challenges. Going up steps can be a real obstacle. Because her right leg is stronger than her left, we always remind her before taking a step up. "Right foot first!" When she gets started on the right foot, the task is much easier.
As we head into this year of opportunity, make sure to get started on the right foot.
"Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do." (Ps. 1:1-3)
