4.19.11 "The DREAM and the Dream"

"The DREAM and the Dream"

Joshua 13:1-14:15
Luke 18:1-17
Psalm 85:1-13
Proverbs 13:7-8

We live in a world of zombies. I can't say i'm an expert in the definition of zombie, but I remember as a kid seeing a clip of "Night of the Living Dead" and all these people were walking down a street staring blankly ahead. Each and every day we encounter people who are staring blankly ahead as they walk through life. They travel from disillusionment to disappointment and back again. This can be true for those in the church as well.

Today's verse in Proverbs says, "Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but when dreams come true at last, there is life and joy." Prov. 13:12

Every person has a Dream. For some it's a huge one and for others its simply a dream of peace in the home. Some may have a financial dream others may have an occupational Dream.

The Dream that an individual has is different than the DREAM, but not separate from it. It could be easy to misconceive the "Live the DREAM" phrase as "get rich quick" or "get your Dream Job!" The DREAM is not about self-gratification. It IS about pursuing balance which results in fulfillment.

God has placed passions and desires within each one of us. Those same passions and desires are what can lead us into sin and separate us from God. However even though sin can distort and misdirect desire, when these desires are placed in God's hands, he can do incredible things! That's the reason he gave them to us in the first place.

The DREAM is different than a Dream. For each one of us there is a unique Dream, but the DREAM applies to all of us. the DREAM gives us a track to run on as we grow in Christ. To accomplish the Dreams God has placed in our heart, we MUST live the DREAM.

The DREAM represents the Balanced Christian Life. Its principles can serve as a "self-check" of key ingredients in the life of a follower of Christ.

Are you living the DREAM?

Ask yourself these questions:

Dynamic Lifestyle of Worship - How is my relationship with the Lord? Am I in a good place right now? Worship is my fellowship and communion with him. Is there anything that is "clogging" the communication lines? The "D" represents the principle of obedience. Obedience is the highest form of worship. Is there any thing in my life that I know I'm being disobedient about?

Relationships Devoted to Unity - How are my relationships with others? Am I building others up instead of tearing them down? Am I living as a part of the Body of Christ, or am I off doing things on my own? The "R" represents the principle of Submission. Do I model biblical submission to those around me? Do I take the time to meet the needs of others?

Empowered Through Biblical Training - Is biblical training a regular part of my life? Do I consistently get into the word and let it strengthen me, or do I just "dabble" in it? Am I consistent to the corporate teaching of the word in church services, sunday school, bible studies, or do I just go through the motions of convenient church attendance? The "E" represents the principle of Discipline. Discipline means to bring to alignment. Am I placing myself in alignment with God's word. Am I disciplined to study it?

Active Ministry Involvement - Am I being a good steward of the resources God has given me? This is not just a question of being involved in a ministry, it's putting what God has given me into his hands to serve others. The "A" represents the principle of Responsibility. Am I being responsible with my time, talent, finances and resources in a way that brings honor to God?

Mission to Reach our World for Christ - Do I understand that every part of my life is for this purpose? Am I living a life that points to Christ, or do I turn the "switch off" when I don't feel like acting Christ-like? The "M" represents the principle of Purpose. Am I living with this purpose in mind? Am I using every opportunity to draw others to Christ?

To fully accomplish the Dreams we have, we must live the DREAM. You can't get to the Dream without the DREAM! This is true for all the "zombies" around us. So many are pursuing their dream without the framework that God intended. There is no life there. Hope deferred makes the heart sick.

We need to fully understand the importance of applying the DREAM principles to our lives every day. We must all commit to helping others Live the DREAM as well.

"When dreams come true at last there is life and joy." We need to live in life and joy! there are exciting things ahead if we Live the DREAM!

5.9.10 "Leanness of Soul"

"Leanness of Soul"

1 Samuel 5:1-7:17
John 6:1-21
Psalm 106:13-31
Proverbs 14:32-33

Today's reading from Psalms is sad. The chapter starts out talking about the greatness of God, and how awesome it was that he delivered them from the bondage of Egypt. But listen to this:

"Yet how quickly they forgot again! They wouldn't wait for him to act, but demanded better food, testing God's patience to the breaking point. So he gave them their demands, but sent them leanness in their souls." (Ps106:13-14)

The scriptures that follow lay out the continuous cycle of the rebellion and waywardness of God's people.

It's verse 14 that sticks in my mind. "So he gave them their demands, but sent them leanness in their souls." I was thinking about how true that is. When we get what we want, there is something lacking inside of us.

Think of it like a spoiled child. If you've ever experienced a child who gets whatever they ask for, you notice something. Yes, they have a lot of stuff, but they're not happy. There's something lacking inside. Many times it's a matter of ungratefulness, or rudeness, but there's almost a "leanness of soul" that is visible.

How would you describe "leanness of soul"? It would be a life that's never satisfied. It would be a life that's self-centered and constantly looking for gratification. It would be a life that compromises moral standards for the sake of self. All of this would still result in an incredible emptiness that is beyond description. There would be an attempt to fill the void with more things, more food, medication, alcohol, noise, anything to hide the need.

That sounds a lot like the state of the world around us. As we meet people everyday we are looking into the eyes of people who are getting "what they want", and living life "my way", but they are experiencing leanness of soul.

I'm not just talking about people who don't know Christ. I think often the people of God do things their own way and find themselves outside the umbrella of God's pleasure, and it's a bad place to be.

Whenever we elevate our opinions or desires above the will of God, we are in danger of this. We risk the joy of hearing his voice. We risk the abundant life he has for us. In Deuteronomy it speaks of the danger of forgetting God when we are "fat" with his blessings. We must never take for granted the greatness of our God the way the Israelites did. We must humbly accept his will for our lives.

We must find our satisfaction in him. We must live in the blessing of his timing. We must rejoice in his provision, and allow his Spirit to fill our souls with abundant life.

4.1.8 "One of those Days!"

"One of those Days!"

Deuteronomy 18:1-20:20
Luke 9:28-50
Psalm 73:1-28
Proverbs 12:10

There are days when it seems like there's nothing the devil throws at you can touch you. The storm rages around, but you're joyful, filled with peace, and faith, and excited about what God is doing.

Then there are those "other" days! There are those days where we just about slide off the edge into the "pit of despair". I don't really need to describe them any better than the Psalmist did:

"How good God is to Israel -- to those whose hearts are pure. But as for me, I came so close to the edge of the cliff! My feet were slipping and I was almost gone. For I was envious of the prosperity of the proud and wicked. Yes, all through life their road is smooth! They grow sleek and fat. They aren't always in trouble and plagued with problems like everyone else, so their pride sparkles like a jeweled necklace, and their clothing is woven of cruelty! These fat cats have everything their hearts could ever wish for! They scoff at God and threaten his people. How proudly they speak! They boast against the very heavens, and their words strut through the earth.

"And so God's people are dismayed and confused, and drink it all in. 'Does God realize what is going on?' they ask. 'Look at these men of arrogance; they never have to lift a finger - theirs is a life of ease; and all the time their riches multiply.'" (Ps 73:1-12)

Have ya been there?

"Have I been wasting my time? Why take the trouble to be pure? All I get out of it is trouble and woe - everyday and all day long! If I had really said that, I would have been a traitor to your people. Yet it is so hard to explain it - this prosperity of those who hate the Lord." (v.13-16)

If you're like me, I feel really guilty when I'm having one of "those" days. It is like a trap. When you start thinking like that, you get snared by self-pity. There's a draw to it. Why take the trouble to be pure?

Listen to where the healthy perspective comes from:

"Then one day i went into God's sanctuary to meditate, and thought about the future of these evil men. What a slippery path they are on - suddenly God will send them sliding over the edge of the cliff and down to their destruction: an instant end to all their happiness, an eternity of terror. Their present life is only a dream! They will awaken to the truth as one awakens from a dream of things that never really were! " (vs. 17-20)

The importance of meditating in God's sanctuary cannot be overstated. We gain understanding, truth and balance from spending time with God. He gives us the perspective we need. Often when we do that we see things as they really are.

"When I saw this, what turmoil filled my heart! I saw myself so stupid and so ignorant; I must seem like an animal to you, O God. But even so, you love me! You are holding my right hand! You will keep on guiding me all my life with your wisdom and counsel; and afterwards receive me into the glories of heaven! Whom have I in heaven but you? And I desire no one on earth as much as you! My health fails; my spirits droop, yet God remains! he is the strength of my heart he is mine forever!

"But those refusing to worship God will perish, for he destroys those serving other gods.

"But as for me, I get as close to him as I can! I have chosen him and I will tell everyone about the wonderful ways he rescues me." (vs.21-28)

It doesn't make a difference how the wicked prosper. God's truth remains. His love for us is ever-abounding in spite of our moments of ignorance.

Gain the proper perspective by spending time with him today! Be Empowered through Biblical Training! Walk in Obedience and live the Dynamic Lifestyle of Worship, and do it all with your purpose in mind: Mission to Reach our World for Christ!

3.31.8 "Keep Close to Me!"

"Keep Close to Me!"

Deuteronomy 16:1-17:20
Luke 9:7-27
Psalm 72:1-20
Proverbs 12:8-9

"Keep Close to Me!" In what situations have you heard that phrase? When my daughter was old enough to walk in stores we began to practice obedience. If Lisa or I would say "close" Annalese was supposed to see how fast she could get to us. She was supposed to drop whatever she was doing and RUN to us. We would also do it when we were out for walks. She'd get ahead of us or something and we'd say, "Annalese, close!" She would turn and run back to us. Now we have two puppies... They're not quite as cooperative!

Why did we teach her that? We were teaching her that right next to us is a safe place to be.

Jesus says "Anyone who wants to follow me must put aside his own desires and conveniences and carry his cross with him every day and keep close to me! Whoever loses his life for my sake will save it, but whoever insists on keeping his life will lose it; and what profit is there in gaining the whole world when it means forfeiting one's self?" (Luke 9:23-25)

Why does Jesus say "Keep close to me"? Because next to him is the safest place to be.

What does it take to be close to him? We have to drop everything and run to him. We have to put aside our own desires and conveniences. It's those desires left unchecked that will bring us to harm.

What does it mean to take up your cross? It means that we live at all times with an understanding that we are dying to flesh. "Dead Man Walking". Every step I take down the road of life must be a step that is not directed by self, but by the Spirit. It must be a part of being close to him.

"But think of all the things you miss out on if you die to flesh! Think of all the things YOU want to do!" The world's understanding is that the only way to find fulfillment is if I chase my own wants and needs, but the truth is, If I lose my life for the sake of following Christ, I will actually find the fulfillment of the all of the desires. This happens for a number of reasons, the main one being that knowing Christ transforms our desires into what he wants them to be. They work for his glory.

When we live to serve the flesh, we ultimately lose out not only on the fulfillment, but can eventually lose our soul because we are living for self.

What steps are you taking today? Are they for your desire and convenience, or are they for walking in step with Christ? Stay close to him today!

1.24.8 "The Big Dream"

"The Big Dream"

Genesis 48:1-49:33
Matthew 15:29-16:12
Psalm 20:1-9
Proverbs 4:20-27

The "DREAM" (all caps) that we speak of each day represents the elements of the Balanced Christian Life. God also has a "Big Dream" that he has given each one of us. Do you realize the great plans God has for your life? Do you understand that God has created you to be a world changer? The details of God's plan for each of us will vary quite a bit. God's plan for some of us is to be world changers for a few people, others for millions, but if you know God at all, you know that he desires to use each one of us to carry out His plan. He has a "Big Dream" for every one of us

In Matthew 15, Jesus has been healing hundreds of people. There are 4,000 of them gathered there. verse 31 says, "What a spectacle it was! Those who hadn't been able to say a word before were talking excitedly, and those with missing arms and legs had new ones..."

Can you imagine a sight like that? Absolutely incredible. Today's message comes from the next section:

"Then Jesus called his disciples to him and said, 'I pity these people - they've been here with me for three days now, and have nothing left to eat; I don't want to send them away hungry or they will faint along the road.' the disciples replied, 'And where would we get enough here in the desert for all this mob to eat?' Jesus asked them, "How much food do you have?' And they replied, 'Seven loaves of bread and a few small fish!' Then Jesus told all of the people to sit down on the ground, and he took the seven loaves and the fish, and gave thanks to God for them, and divided them into pieces, and gave them to the disciples who presented them to the crowd. And everyone ate until full - 4,000 men besides the women and children! And afterwards, when the scraps were picked up, there were seven basketfuls left over!"

It's a great story, but I believe with all my heart that within there is an outline for the "Big Dream" God has for my life and for yours.

1. See the need. Jesus saw how hungry the people were & didn't want to send them away. You may already have an intense burden for something. You may not be there yet. Either way, the Big Dream is for the purpose of meeting a need. What need do you see? What needs to be "fixed"? Who do you see hurting?

2. The need is probably overwhelming. The disciples asked where they would get enough food. The need seemed impossible to meet. Most of the time, your Big Dream is to meet a need that seems impossible to meet. You may have expressed your burden for this need to someone, and they've said something like "yeah right. Like that could ever happen." You need to understand, that their response doesn't negate the fact that God has placed this within you.

3. What do you have? Jesus didn't tell the disciples, "You know what? You're right. I didn't realize the magnitude of this need. We are in trouble." He said, "What do you have?" That question is asked of us today. What do you have? Everyone of us have a God-given "SHAPE". This stands for Spiritual gifts, Heart (passions), Ability, Personality, and Experience. What is your SHAPE? Do you realize that you are the way you are so that God could use you the way he needs to?

4. Give it to Jesus. Jesus took what they had and gave thanks for it & blessed it. We need to be thankful for the SHAPE God made us, and give ourselves entirely to him so he can bless it.

5. The results are up to him. So many times we view success or failure in human terms. True success is really the answer to one question: Was I obedient? When it comes to the Big Dream for your life, are you walking in obedience? Under God's blessing, the results are exponential when we live a life of radical obedience.

This is a lesson in Active Ministry Involvement. The principle is Responsibility. Are you being responsible to give him all of your resources to meet the need he has laid out in front of you?

Take time today to pray that God will open your eyes to the need. Don't stop because it seems overwhelming. Take inventory of what you have and offer it to him. Pray that he would use your obedience to bring about the results he desires.

1.23.8 "The Glory of God"

"The Glory of God"

Genesis 46:1-47:31
Matthew 15:1-28
Psalm 19:1-14
Proverbs 4:14-19

"The heavens are telling the glory of God; they are a marvelous display of his craftsmanship. Day and night they keep on telling about God. Without a sound or word, silent in the skies, their message reaches out to all the world. The sun lives in the heavens where God placed it and moves out across the skies as radiant as a bridegroom going to his wedding, or as joyous as an athlete looking forward to a race! The sun crosses the heavens from end to end, and nothing can hide from its heat." (Ps. 19:1-6)

"The heavens are telling the glory of God..." That's a phrase I've heard all my life. I had never really thought about it. One day I was looking out the dining room window watching some birds going about their business. I was thinking of this scripture, and looking at the trees and the sky & I was wondering, how does this bring glory to God? I mean i think it's beautiful, but I don't see any birds with their eyes closed in prayer, and for that matter, they don't even pray before they eat!!!

The Lord spoke to my heart at that moment and said, "They bring me glory by doing what they are created to do."

That really pierced my heart. I began to think about whether or not I bring glory to him. To often I think that there's moments i bring glory to him by praying, or singing a song. That's good stuff, but that's not the essence of it all.

I bring glory to God by doing what I'm created to do. My worship shouldn't be a couple of songs & a prayer here & there. It needs to be a Dynamic Lifestyle of Worship - a life of obedience to his voice, consistent in prayerful communion with him and thankfulness. I need to make sure I'm committed to Relationships Devoted to Unity by intentionally engaging in healthy relationships with others. I must be Empowered through Biblical Training by studying his word and committing myself to discipleship. I need to be faithful to use all my resources in Active Ministry Involvement. I need to live with the Mission to Reach our World for Christ as my purpose for being.

To bring glory to God, I must Live the DREAM. That's what I'm created to do.

This example is a couple years old, but it illustrates the point so well. We had friends over a while back, and they brought their dog/horse. He's a huge goldendoodle named Buddy. (golden retriever/poodle) He looks like Fozzie Bear. This dog lives with the belief that he is created to chase a ball. That's all he wants to do. We were playing a board game and he would stand next to the table and stare at you for a solid half an hour waiting for you to throw the ball. When there was no ball to be found (because of the ingestion of a previous ball, which is a whole other story...), the dog would wander around as someone looking for purpose in life.

How many people do we see walking around looking for purpose? Why not share the DREAM with them? Let them know why they were created. Let them know what God can do in their life. Let them know they can bring glory to God.

"Get the ball, Buddy!"

1.1.8 "In the Beginning..."

"In the Beginning..."

Genesis 1:1-2:25
Matthew 1:1-2:12
Psalm 1:1-6
Proverbs 1:1-6

"Happy New Year!"

The beginning...

Here we are at the start of a new year. As we all look at this new year it's like we're at the top of a brand new roller coaster. Who knows what's coming? There will be joys and there will be challenges. There will most likely be tragedy at some level. There will be tears. For others, this could be the year where life-long dreams come to fulfillment. If the Lord tarries, a year from this morning, we'll be looking back at 2008 recounting all that God has done and what he's brought us through.

Without the security of knowing that God is taking care of us, it can be almost paralyzing to sit and wonder and fear what might be around the corner. We must prioritize what will truly be our strength in this new year. Let's renew our commitment to be in the word. THAT is where we will find sustenance for each new day and each new turn.

A couple of "priorities" that jump out from today's readings are as follows.

Genesis 1:1 - "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." As a young child it never occurred to me how important this foundational statement is. In the beginning, God was. How does that effect our lives? That means there is nothing new to him. Everything is in his sight. He knows all he sees all. It is important to live this year knowing God is in control!

Genesis 2:3 - "and God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when he ceased this work of creation." It's important to apply the principle of Sabbath to our lives. We can't live the Balanced Christian Life without it.

Genesis 2:15 - "The Lord God placed the man in the Garden of Eden as its gardener, to tend and care for it." God has me here to use the resources he has given me for his glory. There are no exceptions. All I have at my disposal, whether it be time, talent, family, finances, or anything else, is to be put to work for his glory.

Matthew 1 is the genealogy of Jesus. I'm sure you've read it before, but take note of the women who were mentioned: Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and Bathsheeba. Each of them lived a story that would cause us to write them off of our list of heroines. They were a rape victim, a prostitute, a poor widow, and an adulteress. Yet God took their trial and difficulty, and through their lineage brought salvation to man. I need to take care that I don't overlook anyone. God has great plans for EVERY one of us. We need to strengthen and encourage each other to pursue that plan.

Matthew 2:24 - "When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel commanded..." It's one thing to have a dream. It's another to wake up and be obedient to it. I don't want to just have the dream, I want to make sure that I do what the Lord commands.

Psalm 1 lays it out: "Oh, the joys of those who do not follow evil men's advice, who do not hang around with sinners, scoffing at the things of God: but they delight in doing everything God wants them to, and day and night are always meditating on his laws and thinking about ways to follow him more closely.

"They are like trees along a river bank bearing luscious fruit each season without fail. Their leaves shall never wither, and all they do shall prosper.

"But for sinners, what a different story! They blow away like chaff before the wind. They are not safe on Judgment Day; they shall not stand among the godly. For the Lord watches over all the plans and paths of godly men, but the paths of the godless lead to doom."

Fruit bearing trees or chaff in the wind. I know which way I want to live.

I want what is listed in Proverbs 1:2-3 "for attaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight; for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life, doing what is right and just and fair;"

Here we are. The beginning of a year. Where will your strength come from? Where will hope? Joy? Fulfillment?

God has plans for us. This year, lets draw near to him and allow him to change us. Transform us. He created us in the beginning. Lets be who he created us to be!

If Jesus doesn't return, what does "1.1.9" look like? Will you be the same, will you be different? Where will you focus your growth? Will it be on family? Friends? Wealth? Physical appearance? Or will you focus on your soul? It's amazing how when we focus on growing in Christ, everything else falls into place.

Matthew 6:33 - Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

12.5.7 "We Got What it Takes"

"We Got What it Takes"

Hosea 1:1-3:5
I John 5:1-21
Psalm 124:1-8
Proverbs 29:5-8

You've heard the phrase "Attitude is Everything". There's a great deal of truth in that. When tackling a project it makes a big difference when you approach it as if it can be accomplished or not. Have you ever been involved in a project with someone who always says, "This is never going to work"? They're not much fun to be around, are they?

Too often in the Christian's life we walk around as if the task is too great. There's no way we can do this. It's the "Proximity Principle". It's how the giant seems biggest when you're close to it. We need to realize that even if we're standing eyeball to kneecap to the giant, we STILL have what it takes to win.

"Loving God means doing what he tells us to do, and really, that isn't hard at all; for every child of God can obey him, defeating sin and evil pleasure by trusting Christ to help him. But who could possibly fight and win this battle except by believing that Jesus is truly the Son of God?" (I John 5:3-5)

Don't you love that phrase, "...and really, that isn't hard at all..." If we are living the Dynamic Lifestyle of Worship by walking in Obedience, we walk equipped. There's no doubt, no fear, no question. God has given us what we need.

We are equipped to live a fulfilling life. "So whoever has God's Son has life; whoever does not have his Son, does not have life." I John 5:12 There's no reason that the believer needs to walk around feeling sorry for himself. I need to look inside to the one who lives within me who has called me to do what I am doing, and realize that the giants in front of me are object lessons in my school of faith building.

So what if I'm tired. I need to be refreshed in the Spirit. So what if I'm sick. God will restore.

You know what else we are equipped for? Answered prayer. "And we are sure of this, that he will listen to us whenever we ask him for anything in line with his will. And if we really know he is listening when we talk to him and make our requests, then we can be sure that he will answer us." I John 5:14-15

We can't do anything in our own strength. "If the Lord had not been on our side (let all Israel admit it), if the Lord had not been on our side, we would have been swallowed alive by our enemies, destroyed by their anger." Psalm 124:1-3

Let's have a victorious day! A victorious week! A victorious life! We have what it takes to live the DREAM! We have Christ! We have the Power of the Spirit!

Through the Power of the Spirit,
Live the DREAM!
