4.9.12 "Do Wonders!"
"Do Wonders!"
Deuteronomy 33:1-29
Luke 13:1-21
Psalm 78:65-72
Proverbs 12:25
We know we are a part of the Body of Christ. Each of us have some understanding of how a body functions. In Ephesians 4 it says, "as each part does it's work." Sometimes we get the impression that it is a lot of "work" to be effective in the Body of Christ. That's not necessarily true. When Ephesians says "as each part does it's work", it means that "when everyone is doing what they were created to do."
We are created to be in Relationships Devoted to Unity. We need one another. Sure, there are times when there are "profound" and "great works" that need to happen, but more often then not, the greatest thing we can do for one another is actually quite simple!
"Anxious hearts are very heavy but a word of encouragement does wonders!" Prov. 12:25 The NLT says, "Worry weighs a person down; an encouraging word cheers a person up."
We are surrounded by anxious people. Not just in the workplace, but within the Body of Christ. Think of the last person who encouraged you, and how much that did to equip you to carry on.
There are so many times we can get tired, discouraged, and just want to hang it up. It's amazing what a few words can do to change the environment. I can't tell you the number of times that individuals have encouraged me at JUST the Right Time! It truly does wonders!
This should be the culture of those who walk in fellowship with other believers. We should all be encouraging one another, working together. In "the Message", I Thes. 5:15 says, "And be careful that when you get on each other's nerves you don't snap at each other. Look for the best in each other, and always do your best to bring it out." It's not "if" you get on each other's nerves, it's "when"! But look for the best in each other. When you do that, it humbles you, and your nerves aren't so easy to get on.
You may have an anxious heart to day. What you may need to do to lift your spirits is begin to look for others who you can encourage. Spread the light of encouragement today. Seek others out. Who would the Lord place on your heart? Speak the words of life!
Do Wonders!

10.3.11 "Simple Words"
"Simple Words"
Jeremiah 1:1-2:30
Philippians 4:1-23
Psalm 75:1-10
Proverbs 24:17-20
Have you ever had what someone said to you linger in your mind? "Have you lost weight?" "You look really good in that color..." Sometimes the most simple words or phrases can have a profound and lasting impact. "Why don't you give up. you know you're not good enough." "Looks like you could use some exercise..." "I'm disappointed in you."
Often our life is directed and motivated by the simple words we've heard. I think the choices we make depend on which words we choose to dwell on.
As I was reading the first chapter of Jeremiah this morning, there were some phrases that stood out from the scriptures. Each phrase caused me to pause and meditate on the impact and meaning. I would encourage you to spend time considering the words of the Lord today.
"I knew you..."
"I formed you..."
"I set you apart and appointed you..."
"go wherever I send you"
"say whatever I tell you."
"I will be with you and will protect you."
"I have put my words in your mouth."
"I appoint you to stand up..."
"I am watching..."
"I will certainly carry out all my plans..."
"I am calling"
"I, the Lord, have spoken"
"Get up..."
"Prepare for action..."
"Go out and tell them everything I tell you to say..."
"Do not be afraid..."
"I have made you strong..."
"You will stand..."
"I am with you..."
"I will take care of you..."
"I, the Lord, have spoken!"

9.22.11 "Get a Little Perspective"
"Get a Little Perspective"
Isaiah 39:1-41:16
Ephesians 1:1-23
Psalm 66:1-20
Proverbs 23:26-28
Have you ever seen something that just makes you feel tiny? Standing next to a sky scraper and looking up. Also the view from the top looking down is quite impressive. I've stood next to a C-130 Cargo plane. That was huge! On a family trip to Niagara Falls I had an opportunity to take an early morning walk before anyone else was out there. It was unbelievable. Incredibly intimidating. Getting a perspective of how small and frail we really are has quite an impact.
Life can be chaotic. We see people chasing around after so many things. Unfortunately, It's not just those who don't know Christ who are running around. There are many believers who just lose perspective. We're so busy and buried by the cares of life that our problems and concerns have become mountains in our eyes. It is way to easy to forget that the cares of our life are nothing compared to His greatness. As we grow in our Christian maturity we must not take our eyes off the greatness of our God.
"'With whom will you compare me? Who is my equal?' asks the Holy One. Look up into the heaven's! Who created all these stars? As a shepherd leads his sheep, calling each by its pet name, and counts them to see that none are lost or strayed, so God does with stars and planets!" (Is. 40:25-26)
The concerns of our life don't go unnoticed by him.
"O Jacob, O Israel, how can you say that the Lord doesn't see your troubles and isn't being fair? Don't you yet understand? Don't you know by now that the everlasting God, the Creator of the farthest parts of the earth, never grows faint or weary? No one can fathom the depths of his understanding." (Is 40:27-28)
Aren't you tired of carrying the burdens on your own? Trying to fix it in your own strength? We forget that we don't have to. He's waiting to equip us with power at all times.
"He gives power to the tired and worn out, and strength to the weak. Even the youths shall be exhausted, and the young men will all give up. But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint." (Is 40:29-31)
When my car is out of fuel, I must go to a gas station to replenish. I can't take my car anywhere else. That is the source of energy that is needed. When we feel empty, why do we so often fail to understand the importance of allowing God to replenish us and give us strength? Waiting on the Lord is vital. When you're worn out, That's what you need to do. You need to do it BEFORE you're worn out!
We need to apply the principle of Sabbath to our lives. This can be a confusing concept because we commonly equate this with a full day of sitting around, doing nothing. If you remember, this perspective got the Pharisees in trouble with Jesus. It's not about a "doing nothing" ritual. It's about taking the time to rest and hear from God, and allow him to complete us.
Most people spend most of their energies in pursuit of Sabbath. They work extra jobs to buy the house that they're sure they can relax in. They buy the RV's, the pools, the spas, the toys, etc. all in hopes that they will find the time to "play", which will hopefully fill that void inside: the God-given need for rest and recreation. But even with the toys, the rest isn't taken, the peace isn't found.
When we pause to wait on the Lord, there is a precious thing that happens deep inside us. It's as if God gives us new flesh. He restores our soul. It's just taking time to be at peace. To enjoy him and his creation.
In Ephesians, Paul gives us this encouragement:
"I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can see something of the future he has called you to share... I pray that you will begin to understand how incredibly great his power is to help those who believe him." (Eph 1:18-19)
Set your mind on God today. Take time to rest in him. No, you don't have to reduce your hours, you don't have to quit your ministry. He has the strength you need. You just need to take moments to rest in him. You need to be flooded with the light of His Word. His plans for you are great!

9.1.11 "The Power of the 'Potential' Perspective"
"The Power of the 'Potential' Perspective"
Job 40:1-42:17
2 Corinthians 5:12-21
Psalm 45:1-17
Proverbs 22:14
"You're not good enough to be a piano major." Those were the words of my piano teacher my second year of college. He was right. "You wont be able to get a job teaching orchestra because you lack the background and experience." I was told that by several people, including my supervising teacher when I student taught. All of these words were pretty discouraging. Shame on them for saying that, right? No, the reality is that they were all correct in their assessment of me.
"I know the plans that I have for you..." While these words are from Jeremiah 29:11, but everytime I hear them, I hear the voice of Ralph, the guy who lived across the hall from me at college. He had a slight speech impediment, and really bad breath ALL the time. He was one of those who always stood just a little too close when talking to you, too, so there was no escaping it. I think of him EVERY time I hear this familiar scripture. I was in my dorm room discouraged about my ability to become who I thought God had called me to be. Ralph knocked on the door. He had been praying in his room, and God told him to come read this scripture to me. From that moment on, Ralph became my encourager. He was seeing a potential in me that others couldn't. He knew that God had a plan for me. I began to believe it. Once I did, the words of the teachers and others were no longer stop signs in my path of obedience. They became great tools for me to focus my attentions on the weaker areas of my life. I began to embrace them. It made all the difference in the world.
What happens when you see others? Do you see the short-comings or do you see the potential? If you were a contemporary of Jesus, what would your judgment of him been the first time you saw him? Would you have seen the potential?
Paul says, "So stop evaluating Christians by what the world thinks about them or by what they seem to be like on the outside. Once I mistakenly thought of Christ that way, merely as a human being like myself. How differently I feel now! When someone becomes a Christian he becomes a brand new person inside. He is not the same any more. A new life has begun!" (2 Cor 5:16-17)
There are members of the Body of Christ around you and me every day. What do I see in them? Am I looking through worldly eyes, or am I looking from a "potential" perspective. What's the difference?
If you see a brother or sister in Christ the way God sees them, you begin to treat them a whole new way. You become an encourager. Can you name the encouragers in your life? You know who they are. You love to be around them. They make you feel like you can accomplish anything. For some, encouraging comes very natural. Encouragement is not one of my natural gifts, but over the years, I've really tried hard to see people through the "potential"-perspective. What a difference it makes in my attitude! Human eyes look at everything comparatively. God sees a fresh creation each time. When you look through a Potential Perspective, you begin to see how God can use them to change their world!
Someone you come in contact with today may be about to give up. They may be holding back from using their gifts. They may be afraid to walk in obedience. They may need Ralph to knock on their door. A few words from you could change their world. (But feel free to use a breath mint!)
To live in "Relationships Devoted to Unity", you live with a Potential Perspective. This is your mission. To encourage. To help someone discover and become who God has created them to be.
When the Body of Christ begins to function in this way, it's like a flood of oxygen to atrophied muscles. There is a new vitality. Christians begin to live what they believe: That God has a plan. There is a purpose. Great things will come.
You may need to adjust your 'lenses' today. You may have been seeing as the world sees. It's time to look at someone the way God does. Live with a Potential Perspective.

8.31.11 "How Great is Your God?"
"How Great is Your God?"
Job 37:1-39:30
2 Corinthians 4:13-5:11
Psalm 44:8-26
Proverbs 22:13
Have you ever seen a cartoon where someone's getting yelled at, and they shrink down to a miniature person? I think I saw that when Mr. Slate was chewing out Fred Flintstone. Have you ever been in that situation where you've felt that way? The summer before we moved here I worked construction. It was hard work! My first day of work I ate my lunch before 9:00! I didn't quite get the whole construction thing, so I had to be taught everything. The second day of work I was told to go around an pull all the nails out of the forms of the footings for a house. There was one nail that was sticking out of the cement in a weird place. Oh well, I was told all of the nails... Well I soon learned that there's one nail that is used to sight up the whole house to make sure everything's square. They had to send the whole crew home while they re-measured the whole site. It was one of those lessons I learned as I was shrinking!
That's nothing in comparison to the questions God asks Job. Job & his three buddies have been pontificating on their opinions of why Job is going through all this trouble. The Lord answers Job in a whirlwind: "Now get ready to fight, for I am going to demand some answers from you, and you must reply." (Job 38:3) ... GULP!.... That would make me a little nervous! (even more than hearing from across the job site, "WHO PULLED OUT THIS NAIL?!?"
God's questions aren't the easiest to answer. "Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell me, if you know so much. Do you know how its dimensions were determined, and who did the surveying? What supports its foundations, and who laid its cornerstone, as the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?" (38:4-7) I picture that it's one of those situations where Job probably didn't even open his mouth to answer. I imagine if he even said, "well I..." the legacy of Job would be just a little grease spot on the ground.
The questions the Lord asks are more rhetorical than anything, but I would STRONGLY encourage you to read these two chapters. The Lord asks everything from the source of light to who gives intuition and instinct, to watching the birth of mountain goats, and the nesting of eagles.
When you really consider how great our God is, not only do we become small, our troubles do, too. One of the reasons we worship is to give God his proper place of Lordship in our life. With him on the throne, everything else seems to take care of itself. This is why scripture tells us to rejoice through suffering. It causes us to get through.
Paul says in 2 Corinthians 4:16-18, "That is why we never give up. though our bodies are dying, our inner strength in the Lord is growing every day. These troubles and sufferings of ours are, after all, quite small and won't last very long. Yet this short time of distress will result in God's richest blessing upon us forever and ever! So we do not look at what we can see right now, the troubles all around us, but we look forward to the joys in heaven which we have not yet seen. The troubles will soon be over, but the joys to come will last forever."
If you don't need to hear this today, someone near you does! This is reality! Our God is awesome! There are incredible things in store for those who trust in Him! Do you realize what keeping this perspective can do for you and those around you? We can actually look at every trouble that comes our way and give it a little smile and say, "Bring it on!" Next to our God EVERY trial is NOTHING! It's time to whoop it up! Get your D-LOW on! (Dynamic Lifestyle of Worship)

8.12.11 "Don't Be Afraid! Remember the Lord! Fight!"
"Don't Be Afraid! Remember the Lord! Fight!"
Nehemiah 3:15-5:13
I Corinthians 7:20-40
Psalm 32:1-11
Proverbs 21:5-7
What do you do when it just seems like everything is going wrong? The opposition is too great. Is it worth it?
Nehemiah chapter 4 describes some of the most intense opposition his people experience in the building of the wall. Nehemiah is being obedient to what God has called him to do. He's cast the vision. He has all of the workers organized, and there is progress. And here comes Sanballat & Tobiah, mocking them as they work. Nehemiah cries out to God about this, and keeps on going.
Then things get better, right? No, when the workers visit home, the enemy has planted people to try to discourage the workers. If that isn't enough, then there's an army organized against them, planning to attack.
You know what, Nehemiah? It just ain't worth it. You tried. This must not be of God. It's too tough. Maybe you are out of God's will. Maybe your motives were wrong in doing this. I don't think anyone would blame you if you quit working. Nice try.
Is that how it played out? No. In Nehemiah 4:14 it says, "Then as I looked over the situation I called together the leaders and the people and said to them, 'Don't be afraid! Remember the Lord who is great and glorious; fight for your friends, your families, and your homes!'" verse 15-18 "... Now we all returned to our work on the wall; but from then on, only half worked while the other half stood guard behind them. And the masons and laborers worked with weapons within easy reach beside them, or with swords belted to their sides. The trumpeter stayed with me to sound the alarm." verse 20-21, " We worked early and late, from sunrise to sunset; and half the men were always on guard."
As modern day believers we are facing tremendous opposition. If we really looked at the state of morality, the lack of fear of God, and other situations in the world, we could very easily feel like quitting. "It's just not worth it."
Marriages are under attack. Not only nationally, but individually. The enemy is doing whatever he can to destroy Godly foundations. What should we do? Should we quit? Give in?
I Corinthians 7:28-30 says, "... marriage will bring extra problems that I wish you didn't have to face right now. The important thing to remember is that our remaining time is very short, [and so are our opportunities for doing the Lord's work]. For that reason those who have wives should stay as free as possible for the Lord; happiness or sadness or wealth should not keep you from doing God's work."
You may read that & think, "What did Paul say?? Marriage brings problems?? We shouldn't face them???" The point is that so many people are shocked when trouble comes in marriage. They think that it must be doomed. NOT AT ALL! That's the point! Your marriage is a weapon the Lord wants to use against the enemy. When you get married, you are a target.
Just like Nehemiah on the wall, when you are doing work for the Lord, don't be surprised when opposition comes. Whether it's in your marriage or your job, or in your ministry, you need to follow the advice of Nehemiah. "Don't be afraid! Remember the Lord. Fight for your friends, your families, and your homes!"
Proverbs 21:5 says, "Steady plodding brings prosperity; hasty speculation brings poverty." So many of us want the "get rich quick" plan. Not just in our finances, but in our marriage, and in our dreams. We want to know the secret so it will just "happen". That's not the way it works. God wants us to prosper in ALL things. He wants our character to prosper. That can only happen through the refining furnace of affliction and the crucible of conflict.
Do not grow weary! Don't Be Afraid! Remember the Lord! Fight!

Fight!

6.27.11 "I got your back!"
"I got your back!"
2 Kings 10:32 - 12:21
Acts 18:1-21
Psalm 145:1-21
Proverbs 18:1
Acts 18:9-10 - "One night the Lord Spoke to Paul in a vision and told him, "Don't be afraid! Speak Out! Don't Quit! For I am with you and no one can harm you. Many people here in this city belong to me."
This is a great word of encouragement that the Lord takes the time to give Paul. To me, this implies some interesting things:
The Lord knew that Paul needed to hear this. You may not think that's a big deal, but this is Acts 18, not Acts 9. Paul has already been stoned, beaten, and remember just a couple days ago praised his way out of jail. Why would he be afraid? Why would he want to quit?
Tommy Barnett says "you're not successful in ministry until you want to quit every day." That desire to quit very often goes with the territory. Sometimes we can get in such a tailspin because it's like we get mad at ourselves for being discouraged. We feel like a failure just because we feel like quitting.
If Paul needed this word, we sure do!
Don't ever forget, "I am with you and no one can harm you!"
Do what you are called to do. God's got your back. He's already gone before you to prepare the lives of the people you will meet. It may look like things aren't what you were planning on, but God has it taken care of.
Starting in Acts 8:12 a bunch of Jews come against Paul. It's not looking good for him, but at the right time, God changes the course of direction so that Paul doesn't even need to defend himself.
We always want to figure things out. We want to know how it's going to end. We want to make sure the numbers add up. That's not faith. Faith is knowing that God's got your back!
Another way to remind one another who's got our back is listed in Psalm 145.
"Let each generation tell its children of your mighty acts; let them proclaim your power. I will meditate on your majestic, glorious splendor and your wonderful miracles. Your awe-inspiring deeds will be on every tongue; I will proclaim your greatness. Everyone will share the story of your wonderful goodness; they will sing with joy about your righteousness.... The Lord always keeps his promises; he is gracious in all he does. The Lord helps the fallen and lifts those bent beneath their loads... The Lord is righteous in everything he does; he is filled with kindness. The Lord is close to all who call on him, yes, to all who call on him in truth. He grants the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cries for help and rescues them."
Be encouraged today! God's got your back!
So, "Don't be afraid! Speak out! Don't quit! For I am with you and no one can harm you."

4.9.11 "Do Wonders!"
Do Wonders!

"What a God He Is!"
Genesis 42:18-43:34
Matthew 13:47-14:12
Psalm 18:16-36
Proverbs 4:7-10
"What a God he is! How perfect in every way! All his promises prove true. He is a shield for everyone who hides behind him. For who is God except our Lord? Who but he is as a rock? He fills me with strength and protects me wherever I go. He gives me the surefootedness of a mountain goat upon the crags. He leads me safely along the top of the cliffs. He prepares me for battle and gives me strength to draw an iron bow!" Ps. 18:30-34
We need to hear this encouragement every day. There are times we know this without question, but there are those other times where we really need to be reminded.
He is your shield, your defender! He will never call you to do something without giving you the strength to do it. There may be some precarious times, but he will keep you secure.
He will prepare you for battle as you spend time in his word.
Get to know God! He is is awesome! The most incredible thing about our God is that there's no way you can fathom his awesome majesty. We will never get to know him enough until the day we will really see him "as he is".
Lord, I want to know you more! I want to be in your presence. Help me to keep from making my time with you "about me". Help me to keep my eyes on you. Help me to realize that with you as my focal point, all else comes into perspective, and even the greatest trial is nothing in your presence!

"Be There"
Jeremiah 31:27-32;44
1 Timothy 3:1-16
Psalm 88:1-18
Proverbs 25:20-22
"Singing cheerful songs to a person with a heavy heart is like taking someone's coat in cold weather or pouring vinegar in a wound." (Proverbs 25:20)
Have you ever been discouraged and had someone come and say, "Aw, come on... where's that smile??" or "Get over it!" Or, maybe like me you're on the other end, and there are times when I've encountered someone who's down, and I've kind of blown it off with frivolity or humor. I've been well-intentioned, but it sure didn't meet the need.
To be a friend can sometimes seem to be a daunting task, especially if you're not really sure what to do to help. It's in our nature to "fix things". We see a problem, so there must be a solution. The friend must be the hero and come to the rescue, right? In reality, however, to be a friend just means to "be there".
There's nothing greater than having someone meet you where you're at. There's nothing greater than not being alone. As much as we may think the "cheery tune" is just what is needed when someone has a heavy heart, the important thing is just to be there. The demonstration of Relationships Devoted to Unity is the devotion of pausing and coming along side a hurting friend. Just to "be there".

10.3.10 "Simple Words"

Sometimes the most simple words or phrases can have a profound and lasting impact.

9.22.10 "Get a Little Perspective"
"Get a Little Perspective"
Isaiah 39:1-41:16
Ephesians 1:1-23
Psalm 66:1-20
Proverbs 23:26-28
Have you ever seen something that just makes you feel tiny? I've been to the Sear's (Willis) Tower this summer and stood outside & looked up.

6.27.10 "I got Your Back"
"I got your back!"

4.9.10 "Do Wonders!"
Do Wonders!

10.3.9 "Simple Words"

9.1.9 "The Power of the 'Potential' Perspective"
"The Power of the 'Potential' Perspective"
Job 40:1-42:17
2 Corinthians 5:12-21
Psalm 45:1-17
Proverbs 22:14
"You're not good enough to be a piano major." Those were the words of my piano teacher my second year of college. He was right. "You wont be able to get a job teaching orchestra because of you lack the background and experience." I was told that by several people, including my supervising teacher when I student taught.
Through the Power of the Spirit,
Live the DREAM!

8.31.9 "How Great is Your God?"
You tell me: How big is your trouble? How big is your God? Do the math!

6.27.9 "I got your back!"

4.9.9 "Do Wonders!"
Do Wonders!
