"Who's in Charge??"
Ezekiel 10:1-11:25
Hebrews 6:1-20
Psalm 105:16-38
Proverbs 27:1-2
Today is election day, 2008! At the time I'm writing this, I don't know who our next president will be. 18 hours or so from this moment, we should all know. I have such a tendency to have the TV on, and be glued to the results as they come in. How will it turn out? I heard over the weekend about several victory parties that have been planned, and how excited so many are that their candidate is going to win.
Proverbs 27:1 says, "Don't brag about tomorrow, since you don't know what the day will bring." Who knows how things will turn out? Who will be in Charge?
The truth is: God is in control!
As I was reading the Psalm for this morning, something captured my thoughts. Today's portion of Psalm 105 is recounting the history of God's people. "He [the Lord] called for a famine on the land of Canaan, cutting off its food supply. Then he sent someone to Egypt ahead of them - Joseph, who was sold as a slave. They bruised his feet with fetters and placed his neck in an iron collar. Until the time came to fulfill his dreams, the Lord tested Joseph's character. Then Pharaoh sent for him and set him free; the ruler of the nation opened his prison door... he became ruler over all the king's possessions." (Psalm 105:16-21)
The Psalm continues to recount how God directed the path of the people through times of difficulty and blessing alike, and in all things he worked to bring them into right relationship with him.
National elections can be such emotional times. Christians & non-Christians alike look to the next leader as the one who will "right the ship" and make life better. The truth is that God is in control, and we can anticipate each and every new day with the trust that he is faithful to complete his purpose in our lives regardless of external circumstances. I'm sure Joseph would have preferred that his dreams were handed to him rather than go through the bruising of captivity. But that was necessary to prove his character.
Regardless of who is "in charge" of our nation, we must stand confident in the fact that our God is Lord of All. He never changes, he never fails, He's not driven by or influenced by polls. He works in the hearts of men, and will be faithful to complete his work in each one of our lives as we trust in him.
