"What Do You Want From Me?"
Song of Solomon 1:1-4:16
2 Corinthians 8:16-24
Psalm 50:8-15
Proverbs 22:22-23
Have you ever been in a relationship where it seemed like you just couldn't do the right thing? They were never happy? Maybe you've worked for someone who seemed too hard to please. You could try to imagine what your boss wants, but it seems like when you try to accomplish something, that wasn't what they wanted at all. It can be a frustrating experience trying to imagine what someone wants and then run around and try to please them. Often what really needs to happen is that time needs to be taken to get to know them instead.
There are many who live this way in their relationship with the Lord. They are imagining what God wants, and running around trying to live to please him, but still missing the mark. They sing the right songs, lift their hands in worship at the right time, get busy with ministry, but yet it's still not right. They watch what everyone else is doing and try to fit the mold, but are still found lacking. What's the problem?
The main issue is knowing the heart. As we get to know the heart of God we begin to see who he really is. His nature unfolds before us, and we can recognize what his desire is for any given situation. God isn't secretive about this either. He's laid it out in his word.
Psalm 50:8-9 says, "I have no complaint about the sacrifices you bring to my altar, for you bring them regularly. But it isn't sacrificial bullocks and goats that I really want from you."
Yes, church attendance and corporate worship are important. When that's a part of your life, God has no complaint. But what does he REALLY want??
verse 14-15 "What I want from you is your true thanks; I want your promises fulfilled. I want you to trust me in your times of trouble, so I can rescue you, and you can give me glory."
There's your job description.
Is it the sacrifice that gives us right relationship with the Lord, or is the sacrifice the result of a right relationship? Is it church attendance that gets you right with God, or is your church attendance a result of being right with God? You can go back and forth on that and get a little distracted, but the point is: Right doing produces right thinking which produces right feeling. But whatever the path, the important thing is that it becomes a heart matter. We need to BE who God created us to be. We need to worship him in spirit and in truth.
I am all about living the DREAM as you already know. But just going through the checklist is not what God is after. You can participate in worship, go to fellowships, read your bible every day, be active in ministry, and hand out tracts, and STILL miss the mark!
WHAT??!!!?? You mean I've wasted all this time trying to Live the DREAM!?!
When you live a life of TRUE thanks, fulfilling your promises to God, and trust him in times of trouble, the FRUIT is living the DREAM. You can't help but worship through an obedient walk. You are committed to the health of the Body. You can't wait to get into the word, and to serve others. You can't help but bring him glory.
This is our job description. Live a life of thanks. Fulfill the promises you've made to God. Trust him in all situations so he can make his name great through you.
Through the Power of the Spirit,
Live the DREAM!
